January 2, 1943 General Cannon becomes Commanding General, XII Bomber Command. Colonel Peter S. Rask takes command of XII Aerial Support Command. B-17's hit harbor at Tunis, while B-26's hit marshalling yard. B-25's on mission against shipping near La Goulette abort due to weather. Fighters escort bomber misssions and C-47 transport runs and carry out routine patrols.
January 2, 1943 B-24's strike harbor at Tunis, hitting turning basin, area just southwest of it and nearby rail junction. A few of the aircraft bomb southwest and southeast coast of Sicily.
January 2, 1943 China Air Task Force fighters continue to hit transportation targets, strafing truck convoy on Burma Road. The strikes begin near Loiwing and cover 30 miles of highway. At least 5 trucks are destroyed and others damaged. 6 B-25's bomb Monywa airfield.
January 2, 1943 A-20's, B-25's and B-24's hit airfields and targets of opportunity at Lae and Gasmata. Buna Mission is finally overrun by Australian and U.S. forces.
January 2, 1943 Three B-25's, B-26's and 8 P-38's heading for Kiska are forced back by bad weather. The weather aircraft cannot see into Kiska Harbor or Gertrude Cove. 2 B-24's fly reconaissance over Amchitka and encounter poor weather. An OA-10 unsuccessfully searches islands east of Segula for missing OA-10.
