Photographed circa 1939, with a Fairey "Swordfish" aircraft taking off as another approaches from astern.
USS Arizona (BB-39) burned out and sunk at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after her fires were out, December 9, 1941. USS Tern (AM-31) and USS Navajo (AT-64) are alongside. USS Solace (AH-5) is in the center distance.
USS Arizona (BB-39) sunk at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, after her fires were out, December 9, 1941. USS Navajo (AT-64) and USS Tern (AM-31) are alongside, spraying water to cool here burned out forward superstructure and midships area. In the left center distance are the masts of USS West Virginia (BB-48) and USS Tennessee (BB-43).h
USS Maryland (BB-46) at berth F-5, with men working on the capsized hull of USS Oklahoma (BB-37) alongside, during or immediately after the Japanese attack. USS Tennessee (BB-43) is visible in the left background.
View looking toward 1010 Dock, with USS Oglala (CM-4) capsized in the foreground. To the left is USS Argonne (AG-31), with USS Sacremento (PG-19) barely visible beyond her.
USS North Carolina (BB-55) at sea during her shakedown cruise, circa April-May 1941. Note what appears to be false-bow-wave camouflage forward, possibly the result of wave action on her new paint.
View of the sunken USS Arizona's (BB-39) forward superstructure. The photograph was taken on February 17, 1942, as work began to remove the collapsed wreckage. The crane is removing Arizona's mainmast.
View of USS Shaw's (DD-373) wrecked bow section, severed from the rest of the ship by the explosion of her forward magazines during the December 7, 1941 Japanese air raid on Pearl Harbor. Photographed in the floating drydock YFD-2 on January 11, 1942, as salvage operations were underway. Guns visible are Shaw's forward 5""/38 mounts.
View taken on December 10, 1941, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, showing the Arizona (BB-39) sunk at her moorings as a result of the Japanese attack on December 7. Ships in the background include (from left to center): USS Tangier (AV-8), USS Solace (AH-5), a Brooklyn class light cruiser, and the hulk of the old minelayer USS Baltimore (CM-1).
Closeup view of torpedo damage to the USS Oglala's (CM-4) port side midships hull, taken on July 4, 1942 in drydock at the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard. Oglala had been sunk beside Pearl Harbor's 1010 dock during the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack, but was not herself directly hit. The heavy damage to her hull seen here was caused by the explosion of an aerial torpedo on USS Helena (CL-50), which was alongside some eight feet distant from Oglala.
Photographed in 1939, with a flight of No.820 Squadron Fairey "Swordfish I" aircraft passing overhead. The plane nearest to the camera, marked "650", is # L9781.
HMS Furious photographed in 1918, with palisade windbreaks raised on her flying-off deck, forward. Note that her dazzle camouflage pattern is carried up onto the palisade strakes.
