World War II Photograph
Photographs taken by the USS Seawolf (SS-197) through periscope, off Tarakan Island, Makassar Straight, and off Cape San Augustin, Autumn, 1942. Fire amidships of an unidentified ship low in the water, after a submarine attack. Searchlight above bridge and small boats in forward deck indicate the ship may have been used as a transport. Five men prepare to lower a boat from forward deck; another boat has broken away from its forward davit. Possibly Gifu Maru sunk November 2, 1942 in Davao Gulf or Keiro Maru sunk November 8, 1942.
