World War II Photograph
A wing of “Fox-Four” (Grumman fighter plane) piloted by Lieutenant Junior Grade T.S. Gay of fighting Squadron Six, USS Enterprise, returned with a Japanese 20mm cannon hole in the port side, following the attack on the Solomon Islands. Efficient air defense from the Enterprise, Saratoga, and Wasp carrier groups sent some of the Japanese who survived back to their base sadder and much wiser. (August 7, 1942)
